Ebay Sellers Beware
I've been trying to sell my old printer on ebay over the last couple of days, and was suprised to see that it had been sold using the pay now option, which I thought was a bit odd because I wasn't expecting it to sell due to an ebay shop selling the same one for much less. Anyway I was notified of the sale through my email account, I got the usual ebay automated message but along with it I recieved a rather suspiscious email: [...]
"Dear Seller,
How is business and family?. I have just won your item which am ready to pay you via POSTAL ORDER WHICH CAN BE CASHED AT A NEARBY POST OFFICE,and i am not presently in singapore now and i would appreciate you do me a favor by helping me send this item to my best friend's duagther in Africa for upcoming business centre ,so please if you don't mind help me check with the with the nearest courier service for the shipment cost and i will pay you any amount for the shipping cost down to africa.I'll be very grateful if you can do this little favor for me. Here is the receiver's name and address below:
Tony Okey
5 Abimbola Shodipe Street
off western avenue
Surulere,Lagos.
23401
Nigeria.
N.B PLS REPLY BY SENDING YOUR NAME,ADDRESS INCLUDING THE TOTAL OF SHIPPING SO I CAN SEND PAYMENT IMMEDIATELY. THANKS...."
What made me suspiscious was the fact that the buyer supposedly lives in Singapore but wanted me to post the item to Nigeria, which is really annoying as I stated that I would only post to locations within the UK meaning that they had ended my auction early for nothing.
The email also contained an elaborate story about the location I was sending to which in itself set off the alarm bells. Not only that, the buyer told me that they would pay me for the shipping fees which I looked up and would cost £70, now £70 for shipping plus the £30 for the sale is way more than it would cost to buy the printer brand new, very odd!
So I did a quick search for the buyers address on google and low and behold my eyes were opened to one of many scams from Nigeria. It's absolutely amazing how many people fall for these scams. The most worrying of which is a scam where people are told to go to a certain location to pick up money. Only to be kidnapped and their families bribed for thousands.
I would say to anyone using ebay be they selling or buying that be very wary when dealing with people with an address in Nigeria especially around the Lagos area.
I have reported the buyer to ebay, so they should have their account suspended shortly. Unfortunately this doesn't stop them from registering again under a different name, which they will!
